Navigating the Waves of Life: From Drowning to Financial Empowerment

In 2008, I found myself submerged in the turbulent waters of life. As a single mom with three kids, I was not only coping with the emotional toll of a recent divorce but also grappling with the financial challenges of living without a steady income. The waves of uncertainty and anxiety crashed around me, and I yearned for a way to break free from the relentless cycle of living paycheck to paycheck.

Little did I know that these challenging times would become the catalyst for a transformative journey—one that would see me not only survive but thrive. This is my story, a narrative of resilience, growth, and the pursuit of financial empowerment. Join me as I recount the highs and lows, the struggles, and the triumphs that shaped my path from drowning in financial stress to confidently steering my own ship.

Turning the Tide: Graduating College and Re-entering the Workforce

As the storm raged on, I made a pivotal decision to reclaim control over my life. I embarked on a journey to acquire new skills, enrolling in college to become a Medical Assistant. Graduating college was a significant milestone, opening the door to employment opportunities that promised more than minimum wage earnings. Yet, despite the progress, financial challenges persisted.

My entry into the workforce marked a critical turning point. A full-time job provided a steady income, but the end of each month brought a familiar conundrum—I found myself wondering where my hard-earned money had vanished. The lack of a clear financial plan left me feeling adrift, with little to show for my efforts. The quest for stability led me to confront my spending habits and attempt to learn the concept of a budget, unsuccessfully. But my bills were paid every month, barely, but paid, so I thought I was doing okay.

Navigating Challenges: The Struggle of Earning and Managing Income

Even though entering the workforce provided financial relief, the reality was a delicate balancing act. My income barely covered monthly expenses, leaving me with an empty wallet at the close of each month. I felt the weight of financial stress as I navigated the complexities of budgeting. The journey was challenging, and even with a full-time job, the struggle persisted. Learning to budget in a way that I could be consistent with was a struggle.

During this time, I had my parents’ support, yet my battle with depression kept me from fully engaging with available resources. Despite my efforts to seek online communities, my interactions remained minimal. The Knights of Columbus (KOC) played a pivotal role, providing financial assistance one Christmas, a gesture that underscored the importance of community and support. This was a key point in moving forward. I had to do better, I had to understand, I had to take care of my family, and I had to pay it forward someday.

Discovering Financial Literacy: A Shift in Mindset

Amid the financial fog, a breakthrough came when I learned about the concept of a zero-dollar budget. Tracking my income against expenses revealed a stark truth—I was spending recklessly, despite earning a decent wage post-college. The newfound awareness prompted a shift in mindset. I again embarked on learning the discipline of a zero-dollar budget, began tithing to the church, and deepened my understanding of personal finance. It was very rocky at the beginning; learning to budget every cent that comes into the house was a struggle and can take time to perfect.

Despite these changes, the impact of my earlier struggles lingered in the form of student loans, car payments, mortgage payments, monthly bills, and daily living expenses. While our needs were met, the extras were a luxury we couldn’t afford. My children faced the disappointment of not participating in activities their friends enjoyed. Yet, their resilience and understanding fueled my determination to break free from the cycle of financial hardship.

Navigating Career Transitions and Financial Mastery

The initial euphoria of graduating with multiple associate degrees gave way to a sobering reality—my first job after college paid a modest $11 per hour. Healthcare positions, while fulfilling, often capped at 40 hours per week, leaving no room for overtime. Financially, it translated to just getting by, with no room for extra luxuries. I felt stuck, emotionally drained, and often teary-eyed, wondering if life would ever get easier.

The pursuit of higher education persisted. A Bachelor’s degree followed in 2012. This allowed for a small bump in pay, but the financial struggles were still present. It was in this period that I encountered the concept of a zero-dollar budget once again. The idea of allocating every dollar with intention and tracking every expense became a lifeline. However, it took multiple attempts before I mastered this financial tool.

In 2015, armed with a Master’s degree, my income saw a boost as I took on a second job as an adjunct. While the additional income was a welcome relief, my money management skills were still evolving. One tearful night, desperate for a solution, I delved into online resources on budgeting. The zero-dollar budget, once a challenge, now felt like the missing piece of the puzzle. Armed with newfound knowledge, I gained control over my spending and, for the first time, felt a sense of financial empowerment.

Rebuilding Life, Marriage, and Financial Wellness

The turning point came when I met a wonderful man, and our love story led to marriage in 2020. However, the ghosts of financial struggles lingered. By 2018, I had established a routine that worked seamlessly each week, incorporating the principles of a zero-dollar budget. My husband (Significant Other at the time), witnessed the transformation and, in 2018, took on the journey of mastering his relationship with money. Together we have weathered the storm of being anchored by financial woes, to living intentionally with our finances.

Describing the early stages of my financial journey, I liken it to being in deep waters—constantly struggling, feeling like I was drowning. As things improved, I progressed from treading water to holding onto the side of the boat. Eventually, I found myself sitting comfortably in the boat. The journey metaphor aptly portrays the progression, the struggle, and the eventual triumph over financial adversities.

In 2018, I finally felt in control, steering my finances with purpose. The stress that once accompanied financial discussions dissolved, making way for a more harmonious and prosperous life. The terms used to describe my life at different stages—drowning, treading water, holding onto the boat—reflect the evolving narrative of my financial journey, each term holding a chapter of growth and resilience.

With newfound mastery over my financial situation, the trajectory of my life shifted positively. From being a single mom struggling to make ends meet in 2008, I emerged as someone capable of not only weathering financial storms but also guiding others to financial wellness.

As I reflect on my journey from financial turmoil to tranquility, my heart brims with gratitude for the lessons learned. It’s not just a personal victory; it’s a testament to the transformative power of mastering personal finances. Now, my mission is to share this knowledge, to extend a guiding hand to those still navigating stormy financial seas.
